All About HoLEP

Why Laser Has Surpassed the Conventional Technique

The Procedure

What is HoLEP?

HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) is a minimally invasive procedure. The prostate tissue obstructing urinary flow is removed endoscopically, without external incisions, by enucleating the entire transition zone of the prostate.

Indications

Who is it for?

Ideal for men over 50 with moderate to severe urinary symptoms (weak stream, getting up at night). There is no prostate size limit (60 g, 120 g, 180 g or larger), making it the definitive alternative to continuous medication.

Advantages

HoLEP vs. TURP

Unlike conventional “scraping” (TURP), HoLEP removes much more obstructive tissue, resulting in an almost zero reoperation rate at 10 years, minimal bleeding and the possibility of operating on patients taking anticoagulants.

Post-operative

What is recovery like?

Short hospital stay (1 to 2 days). The urinary catheter is removed on day 1. Return to light activities occurs within 1 to 2 weeks. Improvement in urinary flow is noticed within the first weeks, with progressive and significant relief.

The Importance of the Surgeon

Experience and Learning Curve

HoLEP is technically more demanding than TURP. The learning curve required for proficiency limits the number of qualified surgeons in São Paulo.

Individualized Protocol

Complete Preoperative Assessment

IPSS, uroflowmetry, ultrasound, laboratory tests and anesthetic assessment to ensure maximum safety.

Refined Technique

High-Precision Procedure

Dr. Bruno Benigno performs HoLEP with specific training and extensive accumulated experience, delivering consistent results at a leading hospital.

Prevention and Care

Histopathological Analysis

All removed tissue is analyzed. In 5 to 10% of cases the examination reveals incidental cancer, allowing early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Ongoing Follow-up

Structured Follow-up

Regular visits at 15 days, 3 months and 12 months after surgery to ensure full functional rehabilitation and patient satisfaction.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about HoLEP

Yes. HoLEP is on the list of procedures that health insurance plans in Brazil are required to cover. The Clínica Uro Onco team guides you through the entire authorization process with your health insurance plan.
Yes — this is one of the great advantages of HoLEP. The holmium laser has excellent hemostatic capacity, allowing the procedure to be performed safely in anticoagulated patients, after an appropriate protocol with the cardiologist.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Because the obstructive tissue is removed completely, medications such as alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors are usually discontinued after recovery.
Yes. All removed tissue is sent for histopathological analysis. In 5 to 10% of cases the examination reveals incidental prostate cancer — which allows early diagnosis and timely treatment.
Yes — this is one of its main advantages over other techniques. Prostates of 150 or 200 grams are treated with the same procedure, with no need for open surgery.
ThuLEP and ThuFLEP use a thulium laser instead of holmium. The principles are similar (laser enucleation), with growing evidence of equivalent efficacy. HoLEP remains the technique with the largest body of accumulated scientific evidence.
