According to the Cancer Survival Manual (MSC), perineural invasion means that cancer cells were found around or along a nerve fiber inside the prostate.

When this is found in a biopsy, it means there is a higher chance of the disease spreading outside the prostate.

However, perineural invasion does not mean the cancer has already spread. Although it is a cause for concern, perineural invasion does not automatically mean that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Several factors influence this possibility, such as:

  • the size and location of the tumor.
  • blood vessel invasion
  • lymphatic vessel invasion
  • type of prostate adenocarcinoma (Gleason scale)

The MSC recommends that patients diagnosed with perineural invasion seek specialist advice to better understand their situation and make the right decisions about their treatment.
